From Whistler, CAN
(November 12, 2022) – Austria’s Florian Auer edged out Ukraine’s Vladyslav Heraskevych to win his first ever IBSF gold medal.
Auer trailed Heraskevych by just .09 going into the second run, with USA’s Austin Florian and others with an outside chance at the top of the podium. The American set the quick time of the second heat to move into the lead. On his second run, Auer matched that time to take the lead from Florian.
That left Ukraine’s Heraskevych. The big Ukrainian matched his first heat start time off the top, but couldn’t quite match the speeds set by either Auer or Florian after a crash out of Curve 16 set him back, and fell back to second by .04 to win his second consecutive silver medal, while Auer won gold.
The win gave Auer his first IBSF international gold medal. His previous best had been set a day prior with a bronze medal effort in Whistler.
Heraskevych’s silver medal was his second straight, while Florian’s bronze was his second straight medal, having won gold the day before.
Austria’s Alexander Schlintner finished in fourth, ahead of Andrew Blaser of the United States and Canada’s Mark Lynch, who rounded out the top six.
Canada’s Ryan Kuehn and David Park finished eighth and tenth, respectively, while Jeremiah Huo finished out the Canadian effort in 13th.
