From Lillehammer, NOR
(November 12, 2022) – Italy’s Mattia Gaspari continued his strong start with a second straight win to sweep the Lillehammer Intercontinental Cup stop to start the season.
Gaspari entered these second heat of competition on Saturday .17 seconds behind Great Britain’s Craig Thompson, with Germany’s Alexander Gassner and Felix Seibel both in the hunt as well.
On the second run, Seibel was quick, and moved up from fifth to the lead with only Gaspari and Thompson to go. Gaspari was next, and slid to the lead with a second strong run, leaving only Thompson between him and another gold medal.
Thompson was once again quick off the top and at first appeared to be on his way to gold. However, a mistake mid-run dropped him down the order and as he crossed the finish line he found himself in third place, behind Gaspari and Seibel.
The final rundown saw Gaspari .43 ahead of Siebel, with Thompson .49 out of gold and .06 out of silver.
Alexander Gassner finished fourth, only .03 out of the medals. The United States’ Daniel Barefoot finished fifth, with Great Britain’s Jacob Salisbury sixth.
Hunter Williams finished 16th on the second American sled, while Liechtenstein’s Jean Jacques Buff finished just out of the top ten in 12th.
