From Lillehammer, NOR
(February 27, 2022) – Jonas Frei ended his season with yet another victory, this time in the IBSF Para Bobsleigh World Championships in Lillehammer, Norway.
Frei ended the first day of sliding ahead of the field despite two third place runs in the first two heats. Corie Mapp was just a tenth behind in second, with Christopher Stewart lingering around in contention as well.
On the second day of sliding it was Frei who set the quick time of the third heat to pull away from the field, while Italy’s Flavio Menardi overcame an 11th place run in the first heat of the competition to slide into medal contention.
On the final run Mendardi slid into the lead after a disastrous final slide by Stewart. That left the door wide open for Frei, who put down the fastest run of any of the contenders to win his second straight IBSF World Championship.
Menardi overcame the 11th quickest run of the first heat to win silver, while Stewart took bronze.
Great Britain’s Corie Mapp was the leader after the first heat, and while he never had a run out of the top five he slowly fell out of the medals to eventually finish fourth. Sweden’s Sebastian Weston was the sixth quickest slider in three of the four heats to finish fifth, while Hermann Ellmauer’s third run dropped the Austrian from medal contention to finish sixth.
The United States’ Robert Balk, World Cup runner up, struggled to find consistency in Lillehammer and finished eighth, while teammate Guillermo Castillo finished 14th.
Pier Alberto Buccoliero crashed in his penultimate run, but finished the race with the quickest run in the final heat. He finished 13th.
