From Igls, AUT
(February 12, 2022) – Jonas Frei won his third straight Para Sport World Cup bobsled event, giving him a sweep of the events in Igls.
For the first time in three races Frei trailed after one heat, .13 behind Italy’s Flavio Menardi, with the previous day’s silver medalist Robert Balk of the United States in third.
In the second heat things fell apart for many of the contenders. Corie Mapp, who sat fourth, could only muster the tenth quickest time and fell out of the top six. Balk also had trouble and eventually fell to sixth place. Frei, who was second after the first run, put down a second trip nearly equal to his first to move into the lead by .58 over Italy’s Fabrizio Caselli with only Mendardi to go.
Mendardi, like Balk, had trouble early in his run and never fully recovered. As he crossed the line he had the 11th quickest time of the heat and fell .5 behind Frei, who won gold.
It was the third straight gold for Frei, while Menardi finished with a second straight top five in second. Caselli finished third, up from sixth in his first heat.
Austria’s Hermann Ellmauer had a career-best fourth place finish, ahead of Alvils Brants and Christopher Stewart, who both moved up from out of the top six to finish tied for fifth.
Mapp finished seventh for Great Britain, while Balk and Castillo finished eighth and ninth respectively for the United States.
