From Igls, AUT
(February 11, 2022) – Jonas Frei won his second straight Para Sport World Cup race in Igls, once again setting the quick time in both heats on his way to victory.
Frei opened up a .19 second lead over the United States’ Robert Balk on the first run, with Pier Alberto Buccoliero a tenth behind Balk in third. On the second run, Italy’s Fabrizio Caselli set a quick time to move up from fourth into what would be third, leapfrogging his teammate Buccoliero in the process. Balk was able to hold his spot despite what would be the fourth quickest time of the heat.
That left Frei, who once again had the quickest run of the heat to take the win by over a half second over Balk. Caselli snuck into third for bronze.
Buccoliero finished tied for fourth with teammate Flavio Menardi in what was a strong showing for the Italians, while Great Britain’s Corie Mapp rounded out the top six.
Of the four heats held so far in Igls, Frei has had the quickest run in all of them. In both races, Frei had the two quickest runs of the race.
The United States’ Guillermo Castillo couldn’t match his previous day’s effort and finished 13th, two seconds off of the pace set by Frei.
