From Mariazell, AUT
(February 20, 2022) – Patrick Pigneter & Florian Clara stayed perfect on the 2021/2022 FIL World Cup season with a blowout win in Mariazell.
The Italian duo were the last team off of the seven to take a time, and were the quickest at every split on their way to a .89 second victory over Fabian & Simon Achenrainer. The Achenrainers had beaten out Russia’s Pavel Porshnev & Ivan Lazarev for the spot by just over a tenth of a second prior to Pigneter & Clara sliding for the win.
Matevz Vertelj & Vid Kralj finished fourth, ahead of Bine & Blaz Mekina, Myroslav & Ivan Lenko, and Tomas Hasek & David Rydl, who rounded out the seven sled field.
The race was held to one heat due to warm temperatures due to global warming.
With their fifth straight win, Pigneter & Clara won the World Cup overall title with one race to go. The Achenrainers effectively need to finish their race in the season finale to clinch second place, while Porshnev & Lazarev are in a similar situation for bronze.
