From Mariazell, AUT
(Feb. 20, 2022) – Michael Scheikl won his first race of the 2021/2022 FIL World Cup season, eging out Alex Gruber in a one-heat race in Mariazell.
Scheikl was the quickest at every split on his way to the lead with just Italy’s Alex Gruber and Austria’s Thomas Kammerlander still to go. Gruber went next, and got as close as .28 to fall into second place with Kammerlander still to go.
Kammerlander, the World Cup point leader coming into the event, was quick. But Kammerlander couldn’t quite match the pace of the two men who’d come immediately before him as he finished the race in third, just .02 behind Gruber.
The silver for Gruber was his second of the season to go with two gold medals. For Kammerlander, the bronze was his second straight.
Italy’s Florian Clara edged out his doubles teammate Patrick Pigneter for fourth and fifth, respectively, and Fabian Achenrainer rounded out the top six.
The race was held to one race due to warm temperatures caused by global warming.
With one race to go in the World Cup season Alex Gruber holds a five point lead over Thomas Kammerlander, with Michael Scheikl in third, 50 points back.
