(January 31, 2021) – Two more cases have been registered with the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation trying to get athletes into the Olympic Games.
The first comes from AJ Edelman and Bobsleigh & Skeleton Israel. They are requesting that CAS grant and allocate two unused quote spots to BSI for it to use in two-man bobsled and to allow for Edelman to use those spots. Currently, the IBSF has used all of the quota spots it designated via their Olympic qualifying standards. However, the IBSF reportedly has 170 total quota spots available through the IOC and has used 161 of them. The remaining spots would have been used for host nation qualifying spots, but those were not needed. BSI and Edelman are looking to use two of those extra spots.
The second petition to CAS is similar to that of the first, and it comes from Irish Bobsleigh & Skeleton. They are asking for four additional quota spots to be given to the men’s skeleton field, presumably under the same notion of unused spots. If successful, the petition would grant Mihail Enache (ROU), Brendan Doyle (IRL), Rin Kinoshita (JPN) and Jared Firestone (ISR) spots in the field.
Rulings on these petitions, as well as the one for Megan Henry, are expected prior to the Opening Ceremony on Friday.
