From Deutschnofen, ITA
(January 30, 2022) – Italy’s Alex Gruber cruised to his second victory of the season in Deutschnofen, holding off a pair of Austrians for top honors.
Gruber set the quick time off the top in both heats and had the two fastest times of the race on his way to a .75 second victory on his home track.
Behind Gruber, Austrians Michael Scheikl and Thomas Kammerlander battled for silver. Scheikl entered the second heat just .08 seconds behind Kammerlander. On the second run Scheikl was just a bit quicker, and his 53.90 second run was enough to hold off Kammerlander by .03 for silver, while Kammerlander won bronze.
Despite the bronze medal, Kammerlander still holds a 10 point advantage over Gruber in the World Cup standings with two races to go. Scheikl sits third, 75 points back.
Italy grabbed the first two spots off the podium, with doubles teammates Florian Clara and Patrick Pigneter in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Russia’s Grigory Bukin finished sixth.
