From Umhausen, AUT
(January 16, 2022) – Italy’s Alex Gruber held off Thomas Kammerlander on Kammerlander’s home ice in Umhausen to win his first race of the 2021/2022 season.
Gruber opened up a .22 second lead over Kammerlander after the first run, with Austria’s Michael Scheikl a half of a second in third.
On the second run Scheikl set the quick run of the heat, only .01 off of Gruber’s first run time. Kammerlander was next, and while his second run wasn’t as quick as Scheikl’s, it was plenty enough to move into the lead.
Gruber’s third run was a tenth slower than Kammerlander’s, but enough to win his first gold medal of the season. Kammerlander finished .12 back in second, while Scheikl finished in third, .26 out.
Italy’s Patrick Pigneter beat out his doubles teammate Florian Clara for fourth, while Clara finished fifth. Fabian Achenrainer finished sixth for Austria.
The United States had all three of their athletes qualify for the second run in Umhausen. Torrey Cookman led the way in 19th place. Henry Anderson and Zane Farnsworth finished 24th and 25th to round out the American effort.
Shohei Tanaka finished 26th for Belgium.
