From St. Moritz, SUI
(January 15, 2022) – Francesco Friedrich and Thorsten Margis slid to gold in the two-man bobsled finale in St. Moritz, beating out Justin Kripps and Cam Stones for the top spot.
The Germans set the quick time in the first heat, ahead of Johannes Lochner and Kripps, who were separated by just .01 behind them.
On the second run Kripps was nearly perfect driving as he set the track record and the quick run of the competition to move into second place ahead of Lochner.
Friedrich’s drive wasn’t messy, but it wasn’t quite what Kripps had put down. However, Friedrich had enough in the bank to hold on and win his seventh gold medal of the season and solidify his fifth World Cup championship.
Kripps finished second, while Lochner finished third.
Russia’s Rostislav Gaitiukevich finished fourth, ahead of Oskars Melbardis and Brad Hall, who rounded out the top six.
The race doubled as the European Championships, and in that race Lochner won bronze, while Gaitiukevich finished with a silver.
In the final points, Kripps finished the year in second place, with Gaitiukevich in third.
It was a strong showing by the Canadians. Chris Spring had trouble in his first run that left him in 19th after one run. His second trip down the historic track was good enough to move him up the order to 13th. Teammate Taylor Austin finished 18th in his first World Cup start.
The United States’ Frank Del Duca finished 15th in his first race as a pilot in St. Moritz after entering the second heat in 18th place. Teammate Hunter Church missed the second run and finished 25th.
Lamin Deen finished 24th for Great Britain.
