From Igls, AUT
(January 8, 2022) – Patrick Baumgartner beat out a strong field of sliders to win his first gold medal of the season in Igls.
Baumgartner had the two quickest times of the race, but only by .06 and .05 over the two heats. It was enough, however, to win gold over Russian veteran Alexey Stulnev, who finished second.
The gold medal for Baumgartner was his first since 2019.
Stulnev edged out teammate Vyacheslav Popov to win silver, while Popov took gold.
Germany’s Richard Oelsner finished fourth, only .02 out of the medals, while the previous day’s two-man gold medalist, Jonas Jannusch, finished .11 out of the medals in fifth.
Italy’s Mattia Variola and the United States’ Codie Bascue tied for sixth.
