From Igls, AUT
(December 18, 2021) – Thomas Steu & Lorenz Koller came from behind to win gold in Igls, edging out Latvians Andris & Juris Sics for top honors.
The Austrians entered the second heat of doubles luge only .001 behind the Latvian brothers, with Italians Ivan Nagler & Fabian Malleier lingering around in third. On the second run the Italians faltered at the start, and that issue dropped them well out of the running for gold, leaving Sics & Sics and Steu & Koller to battle it out for the top of the podium.
The Austrians went first and put down a time that was .017 quicker than their first run. The Latvians tried to match that, but came up just short, .022 to be exact, and would win silver, while Steu & Koller won gold on their home ice.
Italians Emanuel Rieder & Simon Kainzwaldner finished with a bronze medal, up from fourth in the first heat. Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt moved up from seventh in the first heat to finish fourth, while Juri Gatt & Riccardo Schöpf finished fifth. Nagler & Malleier fell back to sixth from third.
Tristan Walker & Justin Snith were 14th to lead the way for the Canadians. Teammates Devin Wardrope & Cole Zajanski finished 17th.
For the United States, Chris Mazdzer & Jayston Terdiman slid their way into the top 15 with a 15th place finish. Rookies Zachary Di Gregorio & Sean Hollander finished 22nd.
