From Altenberg, GER
(December 19, 2021) – A day after being kept completely off the podium in women’s monobob, the German women came back with a strong showing in Altenberg.
Kim Kalicki and a returning Lisa Buckwitz combined two strong starts off the top with the fastest run in each heat on their way to a .22 second victory over teammates Mariama Jamanka and Alexandra Burghardt.
The win for Kalicki was the second of her career, while the silver for Jamanka was her second straight.
The start on brakes for Buckwitz was her first ever with Kalicki. Buckwitz had spent the season on the European Cup as a pilot where she’d been a perennial medalist.
Kalicki was thrilled with her race.
“It was really tight in the first heat,” she told IBSF TV. “I knew we had gold when we came out of 14 clean. I’m really happy!”
The United States had a strong showing on the women’s side of things. Kaillie Humphries and Sylvia Hoffman edged out Elana Meyers Taylor and Lauren Gibbs by .05 for bronze, with Meyers Taylor and Gibbs in fourth.
Russia’s Anastasiia Makarova scored a career-best fifth place finish, just ahead of Germany’s Laura Nolte in sixth.
The Canadian women couldn’t match their monobob success from the previous day. Melissa Lotholz and Sarah Villani led the way with an seventh place slide. Monobob gold medalist Christine de Bruin finished 16th, while Cynthia Appiah was late out of the Kreisel curve and crashed. While Appiah did cross the line and received a time, she finished 21st.
Mica McNeill finished 17th, up from 19th after her first run.
