From Lake Placid, USA
(December 17, 2021) – Frank Del Duca completed a sweep of the two-man bobsled races held in the United States this season, edging teammate Tyler Hickey for gold in Lake Placid.
Del Duca and brakeman Manteo Mitchell put down a strong run in the first heat, opening up a .4 second advantage over Canada’s Taylor Austin and Mark Mlakar. On the second run Austin struggled to find his first run pace and fell to fourth, giving Hickey and rakeman David Simon the lead with just Del Duca. Del Duca’s drive was only the third quickest of the heat, but enough to keep him ahead of Hickey to give him his fifth straight two-man gold medal and with it the season two-man title.
Hickey’s silver medal tied a career-best finish in NAC two-man bobsled.
China’s Kaizhi Sun and Zhitao Wu finished with another bronze medal in Lake Placid, their third straight. South Korea’s Youngjin Suk, Canada’s Austin, and Canada’s Pat Norton rounded out the top six.
Lichtenstein’s Martin Kranz and Ozan Bektas finished a career-best tenth in their first trip to North America.
Del Duca took the overall North American Cup two-man title, with Austin second and Suk third.
