From Altenberg, GER
(December 5, 2021) – Kaillie Humphries won her second race in two days, coming from behind to take gold in Altenberg.
Humphries and brakewoman Kaysha Love entered the second heat just .02 behind Laura Nolte and Deborah Levi, with Germany’s Kim Kalicki and Ann-Christin Strack lingering in third. On the second run Humphries drove a near-flawless run down the track where she’d won the two previous World Championships and while Nolte had the quicker push and was ahead for the bulk of her run, she fell back late to give Humphries her first gold of the season, and Love the first of her career.
The gold for Humphries was the 28th World Cup win of her career in two-woman bobsled, and seventh straight World Cup medal in Altenberg. A day prior, she had won the women’s monobob race.
Nolte’s silver was her third medal in as many races, having won gold in the two races to start the season.
Canada’s Christine de Bruin and Kristen Bujnowski finished with a bronze medal, the pair’s third straight to start the season.
Kalicki fell out of the medals due to a bumpy second run and finished fourth, ahead of Elana Meyers Taylor and Sylvia Hoffman in fifth. The American two had the second quickest start in both heats.
Russia’s Nadezhda Sergeeva jumped up from ninth in the first heat to finish sixth.
The Canadian women couldn’t quite match their success in the previous day’s monobob competition. Melissa Lotholz finished 11th, up from 12th in the first heat, while Cynthia Appiah finished 14th after two skiddy runs.
Australia’s Ashleigh Werner put down a strong second run to move up from 19th to 17th.
