Griebel Wins ICC Opener in Whistler

From Whistler, CAN

(November 13, 2021) – Germany’s Sophia Griebel took gold in the opening race of the 2021/2022 Intercontinental Cup season, beating out a pair of Canadians for top honors.

Griebel opened up a .3 second advantage over Hallie Clarke after one heat. On the second run it was Clarke who set the fastest run of the race, but Griebel’s second run was enough to hold onto the lead and give her gold.

Clarke took silver, while teammate Madi Charney took bronze. The silver for Clarke was in her first ICC start, while the bronze for Charney was her best ICC finish since November 2017 (Calgary, twice).

Germany’s Susanne Kreher finished fourth, ahead of USA’s Kendall Wesenberg. Russia’s Alena Frolova rounded out the top six.

The United States put all three athletes in the top eight, with Savannah Graybill and Sara Roderick finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.

Brazil’s Nicole Silveira won the first three races of the North American Cup season. In the first ICC race in Whistler Silveira struggled on her first run, finishing the heat in 18th. On her second run she rallied with a third-quickest run to jump up to ninth.

Great Britain’s Amelia Coltman finished 14th, while Sweden’s Leslie Stratton finished 15th.
