From Yanqing, CHN
(October 26, 2021) – Germany once again won gold on the 2022 Olympic track in Yanqing, this time with Laura Nolte winning ahead of teammate Mariama Jamanka.
Nolte set the quick time of the first heat by .14 over Romania’s Andreea Grecu and 2018 Olympic champion Mariama Jamanka. On the second run it was again Nolte who was the fastest among the medal contenders, .44 faster than Grecu and .07 faster than Jamanka, and that was more than enough to win gold.
Jamanka finished in second, while Canada’s Christine de Bruin had the fourth quickest run in both heats to finish with a bronze medal.
Grecu could not find the pace she had in the first heat, and fell just out of the medals to fourth as a result, beating out Germany’s Kim Kalicki for the spot. Kalicki came into the second heat back in 15th after some mistakes in her first run set her well back. Her second heat was the quickest of the race, and enough to catapult her up to the top five.
Canada’s had a strong showing in Yanqing. Melissa Lotholz finished sixth and Cynthia Appiah seventh to round out the Canadian effort. A day prior, Appiah scored a medal in the monobob race.
Three-time Olympic medalist Elana Meyers Taylor placed ninth.
