From Yanqing, CHN
(October 25, 2021) – Germany’s Tina Hermann took gold in the first IBSF-sanctioned race on the 2022 Olympic sliding track in Yanqing, edging out teammate Hannah Neise for top honors.
Neise held the lead after one heat, .14 ahead of Hermann and .37 ahead of her other teammate, Jacqueline Lölling. On the second run Neise faltered slightly and the 2021 World Champion Hermann put down another solid run to edge out Neise by just .04 to win the first IBSF gold medal passed out in Yanqing.
Neise finished second, .23 ahead of Elena Nikitina in third.
Nikitina was the only thing standing between Germany and a sweep of the podium on the Olympic track. Lölling came into the second heat in third place, but mustered a sixth-quickest run in the second heat to drop to fourth. American Katie Uhlaender finished in a solid fifth place, .04 ahead of Czechia’s Anna Fernstädt, who rounded out the top fix.
The fastest run of the second heat belonged to Kim Meylemans, who was 21st after her first run but rallied to finish 11th.
Elisabeth Maier was the top Canadian of the race, finishing in 13th place, one spot ahead of Australia’s Jackie Narracott in 14th. Jane Channell finished 22nd to round out the Canadian effort.
The United States’ Kelly Curtis finished 18th, one spot ahead of teammate Megan Henry.
Brazil’s Nicole Silveira scored her best finish ever in a top-tier IBSF event, moving up from 11th in the first heat to finish eighth, while Great Britain’s Brogan Crowley and Laura Deas finished 15th and 16th, respectively.
