American Steven Holcomb is on the move, though Canadian Lyndon Rush is doing his best to keep the reigning Olympic champion behind him. After a bumpy first run, Holcomb put down a quick and clean second run, with his 55.75 being the fastest in the heat, and in the 
process cutting Rush’s lead in half to .12. Rush’s 55.88 was good enough to be second quick in heat 2.
German Max Arndt is in third, only .09 back, while Beat Hefti and Switzerland 1 is a tenth behind Arndt. Oskars Melbardis had a rough second ride and falls back to fifth from seventh.
A great day one for all three American sleds. While Steven Holcomb leads, John Napier is seventh, .55 out of the lead and .13 out of a top five. Nick Cunningham broke a three-way tie for tenth, and now has the spot to himself after throwing down the third fastest run of the second heat. The second Canadian sled, piloted by Justin Kripps, moves up to 19th.
