From Lake Placid, USA
Dec. 14, 2019 – Kaillie Humphries stayed perfect on the 2019/2020 season, winning the second women’s bobsled race in Lake Placid.
The American pilot carried a .13 second lead on Germany’s Kim Kalicki going into the second heat. On that second run Humphries once again edged out Kalicki, this time by .02, to give the American a .15 second victory over the young German.
Kalicki’s silver medal comes in just her second World Cup race. She won bronze in the season opener in Lake Placid.
Canada’s Christine de Bruin put down the fastest run of the second heat to make the jump from fourth to third.
Stephanie Schneider fell from third to fourth, while Mariama Jamanka helped put all German sleds in the top five with her fifth place run. Martina Fontanive finished sixth.
For Humphries, despite two gold medal performances, she still has work to do.
“It’s always great to start the season out with two wins,” Humphries said. “I made a few mistakes and I’m trying not to eat myself up over those a little bit. I’ve still got some learning to do and need to knock some of the rust off. I’m proud of [Lauren] Gibbs, we’ve got stronger and faster at the start this week but we’ve got more building to do.”
Gibbs echoed that sentiment.
“We’re always looking to work better together, in part because we’re both perfectionists,” she said. “I always want to be the fast push and we weren’t today. So gold or no gold there’s always something we can build on.”
Brittany Reinbolt finished eighth in the second American sled.
