From Whistler, CAN
(Mar. 2, 2019) – Much like in the men’s race last night, it’s two pilots who battled for gold in the Olympics a year ago who once again find themselves racing to be the best in the world.
American Elana Meyers Taylor and German Mariama Jamanka both broke the old track record (52.66, set by Kaillie Humphries), with Meyers Taylor taking a .1 second lead into the second heat. Jamanka rallied back on her second run, putting down a much cleaner run that was once again under the old record. Meyers Taylor responded with a quick run, but not quick enough to keep the German behind her, and at the end of the second heat it was Jamanka with a .13 second advantage over Meyers Taylor.
Sitting in third overnight is German Stephanie, who had the second quickest run in the second heat to put herself solidly in medal contention.
Christine de Bruin is the top-scoring Canadian going into the overnight in fourth, just .03 ahead of Brittany Reinbolt of the United States in fifth. Kati Beierl will go into the third run in sixth.
Alysia Rissling is in eighth going into the second day of the women’s race, with World Championships rookie Kori Hol 16th in the third Canadian sled.
Nicole Vogt sits 12th going into the third run, while British slider Mica McNeill is one spot back in 13th.
Romania’s Andreea Grecu crashed in her first run, and while she did cross the finish line she chose to not take a second run.
Women’s bobsled continues on Sunday at 2:30 PM ET.
