There’s absolutely no surprise as to who leads going into the second day of sliding in the men’s skeleton world championships.
Martins Dukurs was the only athlete to break the 51 second barrier in either of the first two runs, finishing the day .76 ahead of anyone else in the field. The first day of sliding sets Dukurs up for what could be well over a one second win on Sunday.
The Latvian also had the second fastest start in each heat.
Nikita Tregybov came into the second run in second, and held that position despite losing time back to third place’s Axel Jungk. Tregybov was out-started by only Dukurs and teammate Alexander Tretiakov, and had two very clean runs to go along with it.
German Axel Jungk moved up from fifth to third in the second run after putting down the fastest time not run by someone named “Martins Dukurs”. The reigning Olympic champion, Alexander Tretiakov, finished the second run .04 out of a medal, but just .07 ahead of track record holder Alexander Gassner, who finished fifth. Christopher Grotheer helped put all three German sleds in the top six after Day 1 with a sixth place run.
Matt Antoine will go into the third heat in seventh place. The American’s second run left a little on the track, as he came back to Tomass Dukurs behind him, but his first run should be encouragement that he can move up in the second run.
Both of Antoine’s teammates dropped spots in their second run. Nathan Crumpton fell from 13th to 14th after two runs, only .01 ahead of a three-way tie for 15th. Meanwhile, John Daly made his World Championships return, finishing his first day of sliding in 19th place.
For Canada, Dave Greszczyszyn seems to have found some of his form, finishing the second run in tenth despite a few small mistakes in each run. Teammates Barrett Martineau and Kevin Boyer go into Sunday’s third heat in 13th and 22nd, respectively.
Dom Parsons was the top scoring British slider in ninth, while World Championships rookie teammates Jeremy Rice and Jack Thomas finished the first day of sliding in 18th and 21st.
