2016/2017 IBSF World Cup – Men’s Skeleton – Race 5

From St. Moritz, SUI

Every season a new track record is set at St. Moritz, because St. Moritz is re-carved out of snow every season. Unsurprisingly, this year’s track record belongs to Martins Dukurs.

Dukurs came into the second heat behind Sungbin Yun, who had a near-flawless first run. Dukurs’ second run, however, was as perfect as you could ask for. The 1:07.25 time down was a full .6 faster than his first run and is now the track record.

Yun was injured after his first run, but kept pace with Dukurs for the bulk of his run down. He couldn’t quite hold the lead, though, finishing .03 behind the Latvian to take silver. Nikitina Tregybov of Russia finished with a bronze medal.

Alexander Tretiakov, in his second race back from suspension due to the ongoing McLaren Report investigation, finished fourth. Alexander Gassner and Tomass Dukurs rounded out the top six.

Matt Antoine once again led the way for the United States with a ninth place finish.  Antoine had nice looking runs in both heats, but a few small mistakes on a track as long as St. Moritz means time being scrubbed off later on. Antoine’s teammates Nathan Crumpton finished 13th, and Kyle Tress 20th to round out the American effort.

Great Britain put both of their men in the top 20. Dom Parsons finished tenth, eight spots ahead of Jack Thomas.

For Canada, Barrett Martineau had a great pair of runs and challenged for a top ten. He fell just short, but moved up from 12th after his first run to 11th at the end of the race.

Martineau’s teammates Kevin Boyer and Dave Greszczyszyn finished 23rd and 24th, respectively.

Ander Mirambell continued to have the best World Cup season of his career, finishing 14th for Spain.
