2015 FIBT World Championships – Women’s Skeleton

From Winterberg, Germany

In the 2014 Winter Olympics, Lizzy Yarnold took her fourth run as a victory lap. One year later in the 2015 World Championships, Yarnold took another victory lap on her way to her first ever World Championship.

Coming into Saturday’s third and fourth heats, the British Olympic champion held just a .07 second advantage over Canadian Elisabeth Vathje. Yarnold’s third run was over .4 ahead of Vathje, which was all the advantage Yarnold needed.  Yarnold’s final margin of victory was .67 on her way to becoming the second British woman to win a World Championship (Shelley Rudman being the other in 2013).  Yarnold’s final run broke the track record she had set in the first run.

The battle for silver, on the other hand, was tight. Elisabeth Vathje was overtaken by Jacqueline Lölling after a second-fastest run by the German, with Lölling taking silver by .12 over Vathje.  Vathje would take bronze in her first World Championships.  Vathje’s teammate Jane Channell tied her own start record on her way to a fourth place finish, just ahead of Tina Hermann of Germany and World Cup winner Janine Flock of Austria.

Annie O’Shea led the way for the United States with an 18th place weekend. Megan Henry finished just outside of the top 20 in 21st. Lanette Prediger capped a fantastic weekend for Canada, finishing tenth, putting all three Canadian sleds in the top ten.

Jackie Narracott finished 16th in her first World Championship, while Katie Tannenbaum of the Virgin Islands improved on each of her three runs, finishing 25th.  In her final race, 2008 World Champion Anja Huber Selbach finished 14th.
