From Winterberg, Germany
The 2014 Olympic champion, Lizzy Yarnold of Great Britain, is two slides away from winning her first World Championship. She’ll have to fend off Canadian Elisabeth Vathje, who is competing in her first World Championship but has shown the focus of a veteran.
Both Yarnold and Vathje came down with a large lead over the rest of the field, .31 and .3 respectively. Their second runs were much closer to the rest of the women behind them, but it’s been enough to carry .32 from silver to bronze, with Yarnold holding the gold medal position by .07 over Vathje.
The race for bronze is equally tight. Canadian Jane Channell and German Jacqueline Lölling are tied for third, while German Tina Hermann sits in fifth, only .13 back. Rose McGrandle of Great Britain sits sixth, just ahead of Lanette Prediger of Canada.
Megan Henry led the way for the United States. In what’s effectively her first World Cup race, she came into the second run in 22nd, but put down the 11th fastest run in Run 2, moving her up to 17th, two spots ahead of teammate Annie O’Shea.
Laura Deas made it all three British women in the top ten with a tenth place effort in Day 1. Jackie Narracott looks for her best World Cup level finish, finishing the first day in 18th.
