From Winterberg, Germany
Despite all of the success that the United States has had in the sport of bobsled over the last decade and a half, the Women’s Bobsled program had never won a gold medal in the FIBT World Championships. All of that changed today with a gold medal for Elana Meyers Taylor and Cherrelle Garrett.
The American duo was fastest in three of the four heats, setting a start record in the first run, tying it one other time and pushing within a hundredth on the other two runs on their way to a .43 win over German Anja Schneiderheinze. Schneiderheinze did all she could in her final run, breaking Meyers Taylor’s track record on her way to a silver medal. Teammate Cathleen Martini scored a bronze medal in her final run of her career.
Stefanie Szczurek made it three German sleds in the top four, while Americans Jamie Greubel Poser and Jazmine Fenlator rounded out the top six.
Defending World Champion Kaillie Humphries was the only Canadian sled in the field, finishing in a tie for seventh with Elfje Willemsen of Belgium. Mica McNeill led the way for Great Britain in 14th, just ahead of teammate Victoria Olaoye.
