From Sochi, Russia
The women’s skeleton race did not disappoint, with Lizzy Yarnold, Tina Hermann and Janine Flock all not just racing for medals, but also competing for the overall World Cup title. Yarnold came into the second run as the leader, with Hermann second and Flock all the way out in 10th. The Austrian needed to find a Top 5 run somehow in the second heat to take the season title.
Flock’s second run was clean and fast, and as the women ahead of her went down, one by one Flock picked them off. By the time Tina Hermann came down, Flock was already in the Top 5, and had all but clinched the title. Hermann’s run was a bumpy one, and she fell behind Flock, giving Flock the overall title.
The gold medalist was Lizzy Yarnold of Great Britain. She put down two solid runs to edge Russia’s Maria Orlova, who had the fastest run in the second run. Anja Huber Selbach took bronze in her final ever World Cup regular season race. Flock took fourth, just ahead of Hermann, who finished fifth.
It was a tough day for the Americans. Late draws led to slower times as the track conditions slowed considerably as the race went on. Savannah Graybill led the way in 15th, while Annie O’Shea finished 17th.
The Canadians had a mixed day of runs: Elisabeth Vathje finished sixth, while teammates Lanette Prediger and Jane Channell finished 12th and 13th respectively. Behind Lizzy Yarnold, Laura Deas finished 9th and Rose McGrandle 11th for Great Britain.
