From Sochi, Russia
Coming into the final set of runs in women’s bobsled, it was the three women who fought for the top of the podium for the bulk of the season leading the way. Elana Meyers and Jamie Greubel of the USA, along with Kaillie Humphries of Canada, were miles ahead of the fourth-place sled.
What Humphries and brakewoman Heather Moyse would need is two perfect runs down the Sanki Sliding Center, as well as a couple mistakes from Meyers and brakewoman Lauryn Williams. Humprhies did her part and waited for Meyers. The American had two early bumps, and while her BMW sled picked up speed at the bottom, picking up a couple hundredths of a second, it wasn’t enough to deny Humphries a repeat as gold medalist. Meyers took silver, and Greubel with Aja Evans took bronze, making it an all-North American podium in Sochi.
Fourth place went to Esme Camphuis of the Netherlands, while Sandra Kiriasis took fifth.
The third American sled, piloted by Jazmine Fenlator, finished 11th. Fenlator had two solid runs on the second day, but trouble on the bottom half of the course kept her from moving up.
The Germans picked it up a bit on the second day of sliding. Kiriasis took fifth overall, after getting up as high as fourth. Cathleen Martini took seventh, while Anja Schneiderheinze finished tenth.
The second Canadian sled of Jenny Ciochetti and Chelsea Valois finished 13th, while Paula Walker and Rebecca Wilson took 12th for Great Britain.
