From Sochi, Russia
Coming into the final day of skeleton, Alexander Tretyakov just needed to be clean to take a gold medal on his home track. Latvian standout Martins Dukurs, coming off a 2010 Olympics where he lost by hundredths of a second and a World Championships in 2013 where he lost to the Russian, needed to make up over a half second advantage. Dukurs cut into the Russian’s time slightly after three runs, but Tretyakov set a new start record on his fourth run and held that advantage to win gold. Dukurs had to settle for silver again.
Going into the final heat, the battle for bronze was between two Americans, John Daly and Matt Antoine. Antoine was quicker in the first and third heats, Daly fastest in the second. Daly lost it early though, popping the groove at the start and having to settle for a 15th place finish. Meanwhile his teammate, Antoine, was flawless. The American made it two skeleton medals for the US in two days (Pikus-Pace taking silver in women’s), beating Tomass Dukurs of Latvia and Sergei Chudinov of Russia.
John Daly’s popped groove and subsequent run left him 15th for the USA, while teammate Kyle Tress finished just outside the top 20 in 21st. The Canadians were their traditionally consistent selves, with John Fairbairn taking seventh place. Eric Neilson had a bumpy final run to finish 13th.
The oldest slider in the field, Great Britain’s Kristan Bromley, never was in contention for a medal, but slowly worked his way up the scoreboard to finish eighth, while Dominic Parsons made it two sleds in the top ten by finishing tenth.
