From Sochi, Russia
The entire 2013/2014 FIBT season was dominated by two women: Lizzy Yarnold and Noelle Pikus-Pace. Coming into the second day of women’s skeleton, Yarnold saw herself with a solid lead over Pikus-Pace that was stretched to .78 after the third heat. That’s all she needed, but still managed to pick up another two tenths to win by just under a second. It’s the second gold for Great Britain in as many Olympics. Pikus-Pace took silver easily, while Elena Nikitina held off a huge charge by American Katie Uhlaender to take bronze. Uhlaender finished just .04 off the podium, while Olga Potylitsina finished fifth.
Canada was never a factor for medals this week in women’s skeleton. Sarah Reid, though, spent the entire race easily in the top ten, finishing in seventh. Teammate Mellisa Hollingsworth had a huge final run to finished tied for 11th with New Zealand’s Katharine Eustace. Shelley Rudman finished 16th for Great Britain.
