From Sochi, Russia
Everyone expected a battle between World Cup champion Martins Dukurs and the Russian Rocket Alexander Tretyakov. The Russian, on home ice, has made it a little less of a battle and more of a skirmish thus far, setting a track record and push record in the first heat, backing that up with the fastest run in the second to take a .56 lead over the 2012 and 2013 Triple Trophy winner. Dukurs had two solid runs himself, but will have to find some speed and hope for a mistake if he wants to upend the big Russian.
The battle for bronze, at the moment, is a two-man event between John Daly and Matt Antoine, both of the United States. Antoine came into the second heat in third, but a huge second run for John Daly coupled with one long skid for Antoine flip-flopped the running order for the two countrymen. Russian Sergei Chudinov is fifth going into the second day of action, .44 out of a bronze medal position.
John Fairbairn leads the way for Canada in a tie for eighth place, while teammate Eric Neilson sits just outside of the top ten in 12th. Fairbairn’s tie is with British slider Kristan Bromley. Bromley had a very quick second run to move him up to eighth. Bromley’s countryman, Dom Parsons, is in the top ten in a tie for tenth.
American Kyle Tress is 21st after two runs, but just needs one solid run to move himself into the top 20.
