2014 Olympics – Men’s Luge

From Sochi, Russia

After the first heat of men’s luge, there was some question as to who would be able to take gold.  By the time the fourth heat was over and done with, there was absolutely no question who ruled men’s luge: Felix Loch.  The German dominated three of the four heats in Sochi, finishing with not only the track record, but a gold medal by just under a half of a second over Albert Demchenko.  The Russian couldn’t hold his first-heat lead, slipping back on subsequent runs.

Scoring a medal in his sixth consecutive games in luge, Armin Zöggeler becomes the first man to win a medal in six games in the same event.  The Italian never contended for a gold, and despite slowly inching slower to a silver, Zöggeler could never get out of third and a bronze medal.  Russian Semen Pavlichenko and German Andi Langenhan took fourth and fifth.

Chris Mazdzer led the way for the Americans, finishing 13th in Russia.  Mazdzer was consistent, but dropped out of the top ten as those around him found speed where he could not.  Teammates Tucker West and Aidan Kelly finished 22nd and 24th, respectively.  Kelly slowly picked up from a rough first run to make his way to 24th, while West had a bumpy start to drop from 20th to 22nd in the final heat.

The Canadians also saw a mixed bag of results.  Samuel Edney led the way for Canada with an 11th place finish.  His countrymen Michael Malyk and John Fennell finished 26th and 27th.
