From Königssee, Germany
It’s been a tough European trip for Steven Holcomb and the Americans in general in four-man bobsled. After a dominating North American swing, and in general a dominating two-man season, Holcomb finished strong, winning gold in Königssee. Once again, it was Switzerland’s Beat Hefti who set the second-fastest run, as Hefti kept the pressure on Holcomb with a very quick second run. Lyndon Rush of Canada took his second medal of the year, and the first in four-man, taking bronze. John Jackson of Great Britain took another huge step forward on the road to recovery of his achilles injury, taking yet another top-five finish in fourth, while Francesco Friedrich took fifth for Germany.
“It was a great day, we made some changes to the sled and it’s running really well. We had two awesome pushes,” said Holcomb of his team’s gold medal performance.
The final race in Europe counts as the European Championships, and with his second place finish Beat Hefti took the gold in the Euro Champs, John Jackson took silver and Francesco Friedrich bronze.
Nick Cunningham picked up a few spots after a 13th place first run to take tenth in the only other American sled. Cunningham finished just ahead of the two other Canadian sleds, with two-man gold medal winner Justin Kripps 11th and Chris Spring 12th.
