From Königssee, Germany
The European swing of the FIBT World Cup, save for St. Moritz, hasn’t seen a whole lot of snow on the ground. That all has changed after the first heat in Königssee. The snow started early, and got heavier as the race progressed, and by the time the second heat came around, it was too much for a fair race.
Noelle Pikus-Pace of the United States took gold with her one-run time of 52.92. Early on the track was relatively clear, and Pikus-Pace was clearly the class of the field. Austrian Janine Flock took silver with her best career finish, while Shelley Rudman finishes her World Cup season with a bronze medal. Australia’s Michelle Steele finishes fourth, while German teammates Anja Huber and Sophia Griebel tie for fifth.
The final European race of the World Cup season doubles as the European Championships. Flock is your European Champion, with Rudman taking silver and Huber and Griebel tying for bronze.
British skeleton athlete Lizzy Yarnold finished in a tie for ninth, which clinched the World Cup overall title over Pikus-Pace. Yarnold’s teammate Rose McGrandle finished 13th after a bumpy run down the Bavarian track.
Katie Uhlaender finished 11th for the United States, while Jane Channell took 18th in her first ever World Cup start for Canada.
