From Igls, Austria
Two skeleton races in Igls and two very tight races going into the second heat. As they’ve been known to do this season, Latian Martins Dukurs and Russian Alexander Tretyakov came into the second heat separated by just hundredths of a second. After the second heat, though, it was Martins Dukurs once again taking gold. The difference this time was a quarter of a second from Dukurs back to Tretyakov. Tomass Dukurs took third place, scoring yet another podium, while Russian Sergei Chudinov took fourth. American John Daly had a clean run that just lacked a little bit of speed at the top, dropping him from third after the first heat to fifth.
Overall it was a really great day for the Americans. On top of Daly’s great finish, Matt Antoine came into the second heat 12th, but picked up six spots to finish sixth. Teammate Kyle Tress, who Antoine was tied with after the first heat, took eighth.
Olympic champion Jon Montgomery led the way for the Canadians. Montgomery was edged by Antoine for 6th, and settled for seventh place. John Fairbairn and Eric Neilson both had disappointing second runs and finished 13th and 17th.
It was a very productive day Ed Smith. He came into the second heat in a three-way tie for 16th. Not only did Smith pick up those positions, he finished 10th, leading the way for Great Britain. Teammates Dom Parsons and Kristan Bromley finished 11th and 18th, respectively.
