From St. Moritz, Switzerland
World Champion Kaillie Humphries came into the second heat in tenth. Her second run set the season’s track record, and then Humphries and brakewoman Heather Moyse waited in the leader’s box. And waited. And waited some more. As everyone in front of her came down the track, each pilot had a small mistake here, a little tap here, and eventually Humphries was in the top five. Then the top four. Then in the medals. The leader after heat 1, Swiss slider Fabienne Meyer made her run down, and it wasn’t enough to hold the lead and Kaillie Humphries took gold from tenth place. German Cathleen Martini took silver, while Meyer held on for bronze. American Jamie Greubel finished fourth, while Anja Schneiderheinze took fifth for Germany.
“Heather (Moyse) pushed amazing today and that kept us afloat. I tried to drive the very best run I could, and it was good enough for today,” said Humphries on her day.
British pilot Paula Walker finished eighth, while Canadian Jenny Ciochetti finished ninth with two very consistent and clean runs.
American Elana Meyers had two bumps at the very top of the track of her first run that scrubbed any speed of her big push to start the run. She came into the second heat in 16th, but a very quick second run (fast enough to be fourth in the first heat) moved her up to a tie for 12th. Teammate Jazmine Fenlator also had a pair of tough runs, finishing 17th.
