This entire 2013/2014 FIBT season in women’s skeleton has come down to two women: American Noelle Pikus-Pace and Lizzy Yarnold. Race number five for them in Winterberg saw them come into the second race tied for the lead, over a quarter second ahead of Canadian Sarah Reid. By the end of the second run, separation was there, and it was Yarnold with the cleaner run. Pikus-Pace had a few bumps late in her run, and while it was quick, it wasn’t quick enough to hold off the Brit. Sarah Reid had two very consistent runs to finish third, while Marion Thees of Germany finishes fourth on her home track and Janine Flock built on her medal from Lake Placid to finish fifth.
Annie O’Shea made her first World Cup start of the year for the USA, finishing 16th. Mellisa Hollingsworth of Canada finished tied for 6th with Germany’s Sophia Griebel, while Hollingsworth’s teammate Robynne Thompson took 17th.
British slider Shelley Rudman had a disappointing second run, finishing ninth. Teammate Rose McGrandle finished 10th from 15th after heat 1 in her first ever World Cup start. Latvia’s Lelde Priedulena also had an impressive improvement, sitting tied for 19th after heat 1 and finishing 15th.
