From Winterberg, Germany
In two-man bobsled, Germany was shut out of any medal, but in the first of two four-man races this weekend that was changed. Max Arndt cruised to victory, while teammates Francesco Friedrich and Thomas Florschütz finished in the silver and fourth place positions, respectively. Russian Alexandr Zubkov took bronze, while Swiss slider Beat Hefti finished fifth.
It was a rough day for the Americans overall. Steven Holcomb came into the second heat in second with a chance to medal, but Turn 9 has been a thorn in the side for the 2010 Olympic champions and Holcomb went over on his second run. The sled did right itself, and Holcomb was credited with a 20th place finish, dropping him back to second in the World Cup standings. Cory Butner also went over in the same spot, and finished 25th. Nick Cunningham took top American honors, tied for 12th with Simone Bertazzo.
On the other hand, consistency for the Canadians, with Chris Spring leading the way in 7th place. Countrymen Lyndon Rush and Justin Kripps tied for eighth.
A tough load on the second run for John Jackson’s team led him to drop five spots from their first run to finish 15th after taking silver in Lake Placid. Teammate Lamin Deen finished 19th.
