From Park City, USA
After one heat, there was a rare three-way tie for the lead. In heavy snow, Max Arndt, Alexander Kasjanov and Steven Holcomb all put down 47.36. The German was the first one down of those three, and his second time of 47.75 edged Alexander Kasjanov by .01. Holcomb, who was the first sled of the first heat, ran away with the second heat, winning by over a quarter of a second. Oskars Melbardis finished just .02 out of the medals in fourth, while Russian Alexander Zubkov finishes just a hundredth behind him in fifth.
“I made a few mistakes int he first run, and wanted to make sure I cleaned it up, and I did. Huge start in the second run. It was a great race, and that’s what we’re all here for,” said Holcomb of his gold medal. Holcomb remains undefeated in FIBT World Cup racing as he heads to Lake Placid.
Aside from Holcomb’s run, it was a relatively disappointing day for the US, with Cory Butner finishing 13th and Nick Cunningham 15th. The Canadians leave Park City without a four-man medal, with Chris Spring leading the way in seventh. Justin Kripps makes it two sleds in the top 10 in 9th, and Lyndon Rush 11th, but all three pilots expected to do better.
Meanwhile for Great Britain, John James Jackson made a huge jump to eighth place from 14th after heat 1 despite an Achilles injury that he’s working through.
