From Park City, USA
Martins Dukurs came into the second heat of today’s FIBT World Cup event with what would normally be considered a comfortable lead for the Latvian slider. However, a 7th-fastest run in the second heat would prove disastrous, and leave Dukurs second behind Russian Alexander Tretyakov. Treatyakov didn’t light the world on fire, but his consistency brought him the gold at Park City. Matt Antoine brought home bronze for the USA, while Sergei Chudinov and Frank Rommel round out the top five.
Aside from the bronze medal, it was a little bit of a disappointing day for the Americans on their first of two races on home-nation ice. Kyle Tress took home 15th place while John Daly finished just behind in 16th. Both sliders will look for stronger run on their home track in Lake Placid.
John Fairbairn finished 8th to lead the way for Canada, with teammates Eric Neilson and rookie Dave Greszczyszyn finishing 11th and 18th. Dom Parsons had a solid top ten in 10th for Great Britain, while countrymen Kristan Bromley 17th and Ed Smith a disappointing 26th.
