From Calgary, Canada
Steven Holcomb has World Championship medals in every discipline of bobsled available, including a team competition medal last year. He has an Olympic gold medal in four-man bobsled. What he doesn’t have is a two-man Olympic gold, but his push to that started strong in Calgary. Holcomb came into the second heat second behind the team of Spring & Lumsden. Longtime sledmates Holcomb and Langton had a third-strongest push of the day, but by the first timing loop they were fastest in heat 2, and by the end of the run the Americans had taken gold over Swiss slider Beat Hefti and Spring. Hefti had consistent runs to take silver while Spring could only muster a fifth-fastest run in heat 2 for bronze.
The Americans were disappointed in their day overall, which is a good sign for Team USA as all three finished in the top 10, with Butner ninth and Cunningham tenth. The Canadians put Lyndon Rush in the top 10 in eighth, while Justin Kripps finished just outside in 13th. It was a horribly disappointing run for John Jackson, who finished without a second run in 21st.
