From Calgary, Canada
Martins Dukurs has picked up where he left off last season, dominating the first World Cup skeleton race of the season. Dukurs put down the fastest run in both heats for a strong start to the Olympic year, taking gold over Alexander Tretiakov. The Russian had the second fastest run in both heats, but could only come within .75 of the Latvian. British slider Dom Parsons made a huge splash, becoming the first British slider to win bronze or better since Kristan Bromley did it in 2010. Tomass Dukurs and home-track slider Eric Neilson rounded out the top five.
It was a solid day for the Canadians on home ice, with Neilson’s fifth place finish being backed up by World Cup rookie Dave Greszczyszyn’s sixth place finish and John Fairbairn’s ninth place run.
The Americans didn’t fair quite as well. Matt Antoine came into the second run fourth, but had a disappointing second run and was relegated to seventh to lead the US. John Daly finished 16th, while Kyle Tress finished just outside the top 20 in 22nd.
Outside of Dom Parsons’s run, it was a disappointing day for Great Britain. Kristan Bromley took 15th, and Ed Smith turned in a disappointing run in 27th.
