2012/2013 FIBT World Cup – Round 9 – Four-Man Bobsled

From Sochi, Russia

Oskars Melbardis and his team set start records in both heats, and that was enough to power the Latvians to gold.  Melbardis has been close many times, but the win is his first ever, and he had to edge Thomas Florschuetz to do it.  Florschuetz finished just .02 out of the lead, while Russians Alexander Kasjanov and Alexander Zubkov tie for bronze.  Great Britain’s John Jackson moves up a place to fifth, two-man world champion Franceso Friedrich finishes sixth and Canadian Chris Spring jumps from 12th to seventh on the strength of a huge second run.

It was a forgettable men’s bobsled trip to Russia. Steven Holcomb in USA-1 was the top finishing pilot in 11th, Nick Cunningham finished 13th and Cory Butner 24th.  Other than Spring’s race, the Canadian teams also had disappointing runs, with Lyndon Rush 18th and Justin Kripps 20th.  Lamin Deen finished 25th in the second Great Britain sled.
