2012/2013 FIBT World Cup – Round 9 – Women’s Skeleton

From Sochi, Russia

The ice was again slower than the first heat, but it seemed to be a little more consistent throughout the second heat.  The American duo of Katie Uhlaender and Noelle Pikus-Pace came into the final heat of their season first and second, with Germans Anja Huber and Marion Thees behind them.

Unlike the weekend’s previous races, there weren’t any major leaps up and down for position, and when it was all said and done, Noelle Pikus-Pace threw down a huge second run to take gold, just ahead of teammate Katie Uhlaender.  Anja Huber took third with Marion Thees fourth.  Thees wins the overall title for the season.

The Russians had a decent showing going into their Olympics next year, finishing fifth through seventh, with Elena Nikitina beating Olga Potylitsina and Maria Orlova.  Team Canada finishes 14th and 16th with Mellisa Hollingsworth just ahead of Cassie Hawrysh, while Lizzy Yarnold leads the way for British Skeleton in 9th, ahead of Shelley Rudman (13th) and Donna Creighton (19th).
