From St. Moritz, Switzerland
It was a crazy final day of racing at the FIBT World Championships. Going into the final heat, sleds were packed between bronze and eighth. One thing was certain: Either Max Arndt or Alexander Zubkov was going to take gold. Zubkov had a very non-Zubkov-like drive, while Arndt did just enough to stay ahead of the Russian to take gold. Zubkov held on for silver.
The battle was for bronze. Coming into the final heat Rico Peter had bronze by .01 over Great Britain’s John Jackson and Switzerland’s Beat Hefti, while being .06 up on American Steven Holcomb. Holcomb set a track record that would stand the rest of the race, while Hefti, Peter and Jackson all faltered, mostly in the top third of the track. When it was all said and done, Steven Holcomb would take his first individual medal with a bronze (he has a gold from the team competition) at St. Moritz, while Beat Hefti and John Jackson would round out the top five.
In their first official races in St. Moritz, Americans Nick Cunningham and Codie Bascue finish 19th and 30th, respectively. Lyndon Rush led the way for the Canadians in 15th, with Chris Spring 17th and Justin Kripps 21st. Lamin Deen finshes 23rd for Great Britain.
