From St. Moritz, Switzerland
Alexander Tretjyakov didn’t need to be perfect for his final run to take gold, he just had to have a safe run. Martins Dukurs put down a near-perfect run to force Tretjyakov’s hand, and when it was said and done, the Russian held off the Latvian by .03. Sergei Chudinov finished with a distant third place. Eric Neilson ends up fourth after a very fast final run coupled with trouble for some of the men ahead of him.
Frank Rommel had a seemingly clean run, but drops two spots to end up tied for fifth with John Daly. Daly came into the fourth heat tied for sixth with Neilson, but between Rommel’s run and a popped groove by Tomass Dukurs, Daly found himself with a top five. Dukurs would settle for eighth.
It was a solid weekend all together for USA Skeleton, between top 10s with a silver for the women, Daly’s top five and Matt Antoine finishing 12th. Canada put two men in the top 7 with Neilson’s fourth place coupled with Jon Montgomery’s seventh place. John Fairbairn finished 21st. Dom Parsons finished in ninth in his first world championship, just ahead of teammate Kristan Bromley, while Ed Smith winds up 15th.
