From Winterberg, GER
(February 22, 2025) – Leona Klein took her first gold medal on the Europe Cup as she edged out teammate Diana Filipszki for the top spot on the podium.
Klein and Sydney Hollering slid to the lead from the second starting spot, and was not matched throughout the remainder of the heat. Behind her, Charlotte Candrix was .26 back with Filipszki back in third, .34 back.
In the second heat, Switzerland’s Inola Blatty and Noemi Beutler set the quick time of the heat to take the lead from Austria’s Lea Haslwanter and Isabella Indruchova, but was quickly bumped by Filipszki and Carolin Kupsch by .06.
With the racing close, Candrix and brakewoman Lena Brunnhübner were the third quickest of the second heat, and only .09 behind Filipszki, but that was enough to drop the German duo to third with Klein’s second run still to go.
Klelin and Hollering were .05 slower off the top than in their first heat, and Klein was unable to match her pace most of the way down the track. But she crossed the line .02 ahead of Filipszki, enough for her first gold medal in Europe Cup action.
Filipszki was second, with Blatty third. Candrix, Haslwanter, and Italy’s Giada Andreutti rounded out the top six.
Australia’s Sarah Blizzard and Ashleigh Werner were seventh.
