(February 14, 2025) – Entering the IBSF Para Sport World Championships, Corie Mapp had won nearly everything there is to win in parabobsled. He’d won World Cup races, he’d won European Championships, he’d won the overall World Cup title. But the one thing he hadn’t done is take a gold medal in the IBSF World Championships.
That changed on Friday, as the Brit took a lead into the final two runs and held off Switzerland’s Jonas Frei in St. Moritz to win his first World Championship.
Mapp led Austria’s Hermann Ellmauer after two runs, with Christopher Stewart and Jonas Frei both lingering around looking to possibly move up the order in Day 2.
Mapp was not perfect on the second day, as in Run 3 he clocked just the fourth quickest run, behind Frei, USA’s Austin Parker, and Sweden’s Sebastian Westin. Mapp’s run was enough to keep the lead, however, with one run to go.
On that final run, Frei did all he could to win gold on his home track. He had the second quickest downtime, behind only Stewart, and did put some pressure on Mapp. But while Mapp wasn’t perfect, he was plenty consistent and that was all he needed to take gold by .3 ahead of Frei, and .45 ahead of Ellmauer.
Frei had four runs in the top four to finish second, while Ellmauer’s third effort likely kept him out of the running for gold, as he won bronze.
Stewart had a disastrous third heat, only the 13th quickest, and that likely kept him out of the medals. His fourth run was the fastest of the day but not enough to get him into the medals.
Westin had an outstanding middle portion of his Championships, with the third quickest run in Heats 3 and 4 on his way to a fifth place finish, while Italy’s David Jennewein finished sixth.
It took to the fourth run for Robert Balk to get settled for the United States as he finished seventh. Guillermo Castillo, traditionally a medal contender, also struggled on the Swiss track and finished 11th. Parker was 15th and teammate Dan Rizzieri 16th to round out the American effort
