From St. Moritz, Switzerland
Francesco Friedrich didn’t need a flawless final run in the final heat to secure a world championship, but he had one anyway. After four runs down the 1722 meter track, Friedrich finishes ahead of home-track slider Beat Hefti by .56 to win his first world championship. Friedrich’s final run, much like his female counterpart Kaillie Humphries, sets a track record on his final run.
The big race was for bronze, with Steven Holcomb, Thomas Florschuetz and Alexander Zubkov all within an tenth of each other and Chris Spring only .14 out of bronze. Zubkov would falter, and fall behind Spring and take seventh, while Spring would score a top six after four very consistent runs. Oskars Melbardis takes fifth on the strength of a huge push. Steven Holcomb and Steve Langton had their best push of the weekend, but was out-driven by Thomas Florschuetz and would finish fourth again. Florschuetz, in turn, takes bronze.
Americans Cory Butner and Nick Cunningham both put together consistent runs and both progressively got better for ninth and T-13th place finishes overall. Lyndon Rush finishes eighth and Justin Krips 12th for Canada. British pilot John Jackson started the weekend out of the top 20, but finishes the four heats in 19th, while teammate Lamin Deen finishes 24th.
